Dear Mason: 5 month edition

Mason,
5 months has gone by so fast!! Someone asked us on Sunday how old you were and I said 4.5 months. Dad then reminded me that you would actually be 5 months this week! I cannot believe it!
You are still our growing little boy! Growing more in weight then in height. I think you're going to be a shorty like mommy and daddy. We aren't super accurate on the height because we measured it last night while you were sleeping. We had to measure by the hall light and daddy had to try and get your legs as straight as he could in your swaddle while I held a tape measure over you. HAHA! According to our measurements you haven't grown a single centimeter. You are still 24.5 inches tall. We did have to go see Dr. Sood yesterday so we know you weigh 16.4 pounds. I like to compare your stats to Aunt Amy's blogs of Lilah. Little one, you weigh what Lilah did at 11 months! She may be 4 but I think you will pass her in size soon.
You are still in size 2 diapers, 6 month sleepers & clothes except shorts. You my little man are just fitting into 3 month shorts & pants.

This month was a big month for you! Mommy went back to work & you started going to your babysitter. This was such a hard transition for mommy because our days together are my favorite. However, the first day that I took you your face lit up the second you saw her and you are so happy there. We know how much she loves you and loves on you & every day you give her the biggest smile when you see her. We couldn't be luckier! You're also adjusting to life as a teacher's kid just wonderfully after school.

We are still using only mommy's milk. I was really worried about my supply decreasing when I went back to work. The first couple of days things slowed down but everything picked back up and leveled out after about 3 days. You are nursing in the morning & after we get home from school. You sitter gives you 2 bottles during the day of about 6-7 ounces and daddy still does the bedtime feedings with you of about 8-9 ounces. You are VERY interested in everything that mommy and daddy eat. I mean EVERYTHING! You try to drink anything we are drinking or grab any food that is in front of us. You also seem hungrier lately so we decided to give cereal a try. We were certain you would love it! We tried the single grain oatmeal. You seemed interested at first then decided you completely hated it!

We decided about a week later to try it again because you were increasing how much you were drinking again. I think you liked it less the second time.

A week later we decided to try rice cereal to see if you liked it more. It wasn't as awful but you still hated it. I decided to keep feeding it to you to see if you would maybe acquire the taste....nope rather you just finally gagged as to say "LADY I HATE THIS!!!" We are going to just put it off for another day.

We thought that we had your reflux issues figured out but my sweet baby you just have extremely bad reflux!! Mommy had this when I was pregnant with you so it just breaks my heart for you! You have always spit up but recently you are going through 3-6 outfits a day because you just can't seem to keep much of your feedings down. The past week you have started your eating strikes like you do when your reflux bothers you & you wake up about 3am screaming and spitting up. When we get you back to sleep you start screaming again the second you are laid flat. The pediatrician thought maybe you had an ear infection but when we took you in you were perfect, just your poor little reflux. I'm praying that you outgrow this at 6-7 months like we have read most babies do.

You're still a schedule boy. Your schedule has not changed from your 4 month schedule. We have noticed that if you stray from it you are just thrown off for the day. You came to eat lunch with mommy during a nap time one morning and you were just exhausted the rest of the day!! Lots of people have opinions about having babies "too scheduled" or "not scheduled enough" & it not being good for them. It's sometimes hard not to listen to others opinions. But we know with you sweet boy, you are just the happiest baby ever when we follow your schedule so that's what we do!

You're still a pretty good sleeper, unless we are dealing with the reflux. For the most part you sleep through the night but there are occasions where you will wake up at night but you seem to go right back to sleep. I have to brag on your daddy here for a minute though. Daddy is a rock star at night! When we stopped nursing at night he would go back in if you woke up to get you back to sleep so you didn't have the expectation of eating. He has never strayed from that. I cannot tell you enough what an amazing daddy you have. Most mornings I'm not even sure if you woke up that night because daddy turns the monitor off when you wake up so it doesn't wake me up. Seriously, you and I hit the jackpot with that man Mason!
Since mommy has gone back to work I have fallen back into the bad habit of holding you to sleep some. You don't sleep very good when I do so we are trying to get out of that habit. You're just so cuddly though!

While we are talking about sleeping, when you wake up it is our favorite thing in the world!! Daddy & I will literally have a foot race for who gets to go in there. We turn on the lights and say "Buster did you have a good nap?!" (Yes, somehow the nickname Buster has stuck this month) You smile the biggest smile as soon as you hear our voice before you even open your eyes. Then you see us and reach up for us. It's the best!!! I hope you always greet the day this way!
This month you started rolling from your back to your belly. We knew that you were so close before I went back to work and were so sad because we thought we would miss it. One night we were Facetiming with your grandma & were going to show her how close you were but before daddy could turn the camera around you flipped over!! You did it a few times that night & now you are doing it all the time! We are so glad we didn't miss this milestone! You actually roll way better from your back to belly than you do belly to back.

Bath time is still your favorite time of the day! In the evenings you start to get tired and a little fussy but the second you get in the bath you start to perk right up! When daddy gets you out and wraps you in a towel to come get your medicine you're little towel wrapped smile is my favorite!

You are very into discovering things lately! Because you are so into our drinks, one of your favorite toys lately is an empty cup.
You are also very into the remote because you see us using it. We tried to give you a remote that had no batteries but you only want the one that we use.

We have also filled some water bottles up with rice & different objects and you love to shake them around and look in them. We have done some painting & you think that's so fun too!
You can reach all of the toys on your playmat when you lay down now so you enjoy that much more!! You really like the toys that crinkle and make loud noises. You love your bouncer! You sit in it every morning while we get ready & spin the little animals on it. You also have recently starting loving your little exercise jumper. Your feet can finally reach the ground in it and you are really into all of the little toys on it. We can sit you in there for about 20 minutes and you are happy as a clam!

I always always swore I would not be the mom that let her kids watch tv but ya know what, we watch it. You used to love Mickey but it was a very short phase. Your favorite show is Sheriff Callie. If you are grumpy I can turn it on & you will just smile & laugh. We don't even have to turn in on we can just sing the theme song sometimes and you are happy. Aunt Lisa got you a Deputy Peck stuffed animal before you were born and you just love it! You also really like Bob the Builder. This thrills your daddy to death! We typically let you watch Bob the Builder while we are getting ready in the morning & you will watch Sheriff Callie in the evening. We have tried other shows that we think look fun but you aren't too interested unless it's one of those 2.

You have started trying to suck your thumb. We blame your cousin Lilah for this because last time you came back from Aunt Amy's you started this thumb business! While it is absolutely adorable, we are trying our best to redirect you to the paci.

We also had our first "accident" this month. Of course, it would be completely on mommy's watch. I came into the bedroom the other day to put some towels up and left you tucked deep into the corner of the couch watching Sheriff Callie as I have done many times in the past. However as I walked into the bathroom I thought "I probably shouldn't do that anymore since he has been rolling over." I left you with your bottle of rice though so I thought you would be entertained so you'd definitely stay put. As I walked out of the bathroom I heard the most horrific scream I have ever heard from you. When I ran in there you were on the floor. My heart broke into a million pieces. It was time for you to eat anyway so I nursed you and when I sat you up and said "can you burp for momma?" you gave me the biggest smile and laugh and were just fine from then on. We sat you back on the couch later to see how you fell. The bottle rolled off the front of the couch and then you just reached for it and kept reaching until you fell down. I still feel completely awful!

You are still Mommy's boy, I hope you never out grow this! Your face still lights up the second you see me in the mornings or after work. You also open your mouth as wide as you can with a big smile when I give you kisses. It is my favorite! I have mentioned before but we definitely notice more each month you turn to your daddy to joke and make you laugh. You 2 have the most fun bath times ever! You turn to mommy to give you love and comfort. It completely melts my heart because it's in those times you will just look at me with your big blue eyes & reach your arms up & whatever else I'm doing in the world no longer matters!

Mason Porter, you are the biggest blessing to our lives we could have ever imagined! Seriously, you have the most infectious smile and laugh I have ever seen. You are constantly so happy to see everyone! When I bring you into school you smile and laugh at all of the teachers or kids who talk to you like seeing them is the best part of your day. I pray every day that you are always this happy go lucky & are always accepting and showing people love the way you do now! People often comment on how good you are or how happy you are and it just makes my heart so happy! You are the perfect fit for our family! We seriously fall even more in love with you every single day, Mase!

Love,
Mommy & Daddy
